Last weekend was the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2016. The Little Robots and I joined in, watching the birds for an hour on Saturday afternoon and counting the highest number we saw of each kind.

The boys really enjoyed this on previous years and this year was no exception. We were running a bit low on bird food, we had some seed but the Starlings had eaten the last of the suet block the day before so I was wondering if we had some other items they’d like. I remembered reading something in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch pack and sure enough found a list of foods you could put out. The Little Robots thought it was very funny that birds might like to eat cheese!

This weekend (30-31 January) is the worlds largest wildlife survey, the RSPB 2016 Big Garden Birdwatch.

The RSPB Birdwatch has been running since 1979, giving 36 years worth of data for the RSPB to look back on. Rather alarmingly, in this time it has shown house sparrow and starling numbers have fallen by 58% and 80% respectively. Declines in bird numbers are worrying but identifying a problem is the first step to finding a solution.
